Arbroath Accommodation
About Arbroath
Arbroath, “Obair Bhrothaig”, means at the mouth of the Brothock is located in the council of Angus. It is some 17 miles of Dundee and 51 miles of Aberdeen.
We can trace its history back to 3500 years with the Picts in the Iron Age but it is only really since 1178 that this small village started growing with the building of the Abbey.
Nowadays, Arbroath is one of the larger fishing ports in Scotland and internationally famous for the Arbroath Smokies, a traditional method of smoking haddock in special barrel with hardwood fire after being first salted overnight and tied in pairs to dry.
The Abbey, at the very heart of the Declaration of Arbroath (the statement of the Scottish independence), is a major attraction to the town with its distinctive red sandstone ruins and is located at the top of the High Street. It was founded by King William the Lion for Tironensian Benedictine.
There are also some more attractions in the summer months such as the Seafront Spectacular with its airshow and Seafest. The Kerr’s Miniature Railway, the oldest in Scotland, is a winner for railway lovers.
There is a selection of bars, pubs and restaurants for various tastes and budgets in Arbroath together with hotels and guesthouses.
