Ayr Accommodation
About Ayr
Ayr started as a settlement for a castle built in 1197 and was originally known as Inverayr or St John’s Town of Ayr.
Ayr possesses lovely buildings, amongst them the most impressive one being the Town Hall, built in 1832 with its clock tower and steeple which can be seen from many points on a good day and the Wallace Tower.
There is the river with the Auld Brig (built in stone in 1470) and the New Bridge , the harbour which was one of the main ones on the west coast of Scotland by 1300 and by the 18th century over 300 ships used the port each year.
The citadel’s outer wall still remains and the town is attractive to thousands of tourists.
Golfing at Royal Troon, Turnberry for fishing, sailing or visit some of the castles throughout Ayrshire (over 40 amongst them many can be visited) or the racecourse which holds the Coral Scottish Grand National and Totesport Gold Cup Festival.
Ayr is also a modern, busy town and with Ayr Central, the shopper enthusiasts will enjoy finding everything under one roof from fashion to food with the High Street names but try also the individual shops.
Enjoy the Ayrshire Music Festival, a competition and showcase of young stars or the Greenan Gallery, exhibiting the local artists work.
There is a wide selection of accommodation and places to eat on offer suitable for every taste and budget.
