Banbury Accommodation
About Banbury
Banbury is located on the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire. It is a market and industrial town which was trading in wool, ale, cakes and cheese. It is in the 13th century that Banbury became an influential wool trading centre which brought wealth to the inhabitants. From the 15th to 18th centuries, cheese was manufactured here.
But Banbury would not be the same without the nursery rhyme, 'Ride a Cock Horse'. It is the "Fine Lady" in the nursery rhyme that has given Banbury its fame. The identity of the lady is not certain, some suggested that she was Lady Godiva or Elizabeth I, but it is more probable that it refers to a local girl who rode in a May Day Procession. The original Banbury Cross was taken down at the end of the 16th century, whereas the present was erected in 1859 to commemorate the wedding of the then Princess Royal to Prince Frederick of Prussia.
The Banbury cakes are a famous speciality and have been produced here to secret recipes since 1586 or perhaps earlier. They consist of special spicy currant fillings and pastry. They can still be found in a large number of bakeries and local restaurants.
Despite the big fire in 1628, some of the buildings survived nowadays.
The town is growing constantly thanks to its proximity to the M40 motorway London to Birmingham via Oxford and see the presence of major industries.
Banbury offers a wide range of shops with its shopping centre "Castle Quay", being one of the largest for the area with over 70 shops.
Banbury has a large selection of accommodation suitable for every taste and budget, ranging from self-catering to local Bed and Breakfast to high-standard hotels.
