About Barnsley
Barnsley is located in South Yorkshire on the River Dearne. It is about twenty kilometres of Sheffield.

The origins of the name Barnsley is still being debated but it might come from the Saxon “Berne” (barn) and Lay for field. It is in 1249 that the town was granted to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. The markets in Barnsley and surrounding towns provide nowadays a vast array of quality products at bargain prices.
The town became famous thanks to its coal mining, glass-making and linen weaving. The pits were situated in the villages nearby but are now all closed. The only industry that is still running is the glass-making with two large companies still remaining.
Barnsley and its surroundings boasts a large variety of places to visit. Cannon Hall Park and Museum is set in 70 acres of historic parkland and offers a wide selection of events throughout the year. You can find the Cooper Gallery in the town centre and it holds exhibitions by both local and national famous artists. Elsecar Heritage Centre in Elsecar village will give you insight of what life was like as an industrial village. The Worsbrough Mill, dating back to the 17th century, is a water powered corn mill in working order and has the advantage of being in a 200 acres of country park, ideal for fishing, walking and cycling.
Shopping in Barnsley offers high street outlets and independent speciality shops.
