About Barnstaple
The name of Barum, still used for Barnstaple is probably of Roman origin. You can still notice it in the names of a football team, a brewery and other businesess. It is believed to be the oldest and largest town in North Devon. It is located seven miles from the mouth of the River Taw.

Since the Saxons, Barnstaple has been used as a market town for its surroundings. Pannier Market where there used to be separate markets for fish, meat and other produce with Friday being the main market day for livestock from Queen Mary’s erea. The present market was built after the Great Cholera Epidemic of 1849.
In addition, Barnstaple is the shopping centre for the whole of North Devon and in addition to 1,000 yards of pedestrianised shopping streets, there is a busy shopping centre called Green Lanes, a big modern shopping mall close to the high street. The out of town shopping areas are expanding all the times.
Barnstaple is located at the centre of North Devon and therefore holds a strong position in the tourist industry as is has roads leading to Ilfracombe, Lynton, Taunton, Tiverton, Exeter and Bideford.
There are plenty to do in Barnstaple, visit the Barnstaple Heritage Centre to discover the history of the town, Arlington Court set in woodland Park and Victorian gardens or perhaps the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon depicting the regional natural history and archeology of North Devon.

More tempted by gardens, what about Jungleland with giant cacti or Marwood Hill Gardens ?
