About Boston

Boston is located near the south-east coast of Lincolnshire, where the River Witham becomes the Haven. Its name, which the US city is named after, comes from St Botolph’s Town, St Botolph being a 7th century monk.

It is a town rich in history and the middle ages saw the town developing into of the leading ports in England. In the 17th century, Boston became a centre of religious non-conformism and then an extensive area for crops production.

The town is dominated by St Botolph's Church, also known as the Boston Stump. It is the largest parish church in England measuring 282 ft long, 272 ft high and 20,070 sq.ft in area, you cannot miss it!

The town has lots of attractions on offer and very distinctive buildings. Amongst them Blackfriars, a 13th century Dominican Friary, now home to theatre and arts activity. Customs House is from the 18th century and displays an impressive royal coat of arms. Fydell House is undoubtedly the grandest house in Boston and now serves as an education centre. Hussey House, one of the oldest brick buildings in town dates from 1460.

Discover also the Maud Foster Windmill, the tallest working windmill in England. Further afield, the Pilgrims Father Memorial commemmorate the place where a group of puritans were arrested in 1607.

A number of tours are on offer. The Port of Boston runs a limited number of tours from April to September for you to discover the life of a busy dock.
