About Bridgwater

Bridgwater is a market town in Somerset. It lies in the valley of the tiday River Parrett. It was probably called Brigg originally, meaning Quay and transformed throughout time to Burgh-Walter, Brugg-Walter and Brigg-Walter.

Thanks to its location, it is an ideal touring base for visitors who wish to explore the West country with its picturesque villages and attractions.

A settlement was there some 1000 years ago and in the 15th century it was a thriving port for cloth trade. By the 19th century a new industry, roofing tiles and bricks, developed but declined in the 20th century.

The Town Hall, built in 1823 is home to amateur drama and theatre groups and you will be able to find local bands playing in the town almost every week-end.

There are two museums, one being the Blake Museum - from Robert Blake, a General-at-Sea, which displays collections of local history and archaelogy whilst the Somerset Brick & Tile Museum is home to the last surviving kiln and give us insight on the brick and tile industry that was once thriving in the area.

Bridgwater is famous for its Autumn Fair and Guy Fawkes Carnival, which is probably the largest illuminated carnival in the world and an event not to be missed.

Bridgwater has many pubs, restaurants and clubs for everyone’s taste and enjoyment.
