About Bridport
Bridport is a small market town in Dorset, one mile inland from the coast. It is one of the Gateway Towns for the World Heritage Site the Jurassic Coast.
Bridport probably dates from the Saxon times. By the Domesday Survey, it was already quite established.
It became famous thanks to the industry of rope making and in 1213 King John demanded a heavy production of ropes and cable for his army and navy. Netmaking followed and for over 650 years the industry boomed.
There are an impressive amount of listed buildings, over one thousand, a lot of them associated with rope making. The Chantry, for example is the oldest building in Bridport. Its purpose was a lighthouse for boats and then became home to a priest.
The Bridport Literary and Scientific Institute is linked to the artist Fra Newbery who spent his childhood and youth in Bridport. The Bridport Museum depicts Bridport’s history from the Romans to the rope and net industry.
Bridport is proud of its weekly markets as they display a selection of local produce but also clothes books, etc.
There is a selection of accommodation ranging from B&B, guesthouses, hotels to self catering facilities and camping caravaning.
