About Cranbrook
Cranbrook, often referred as the Capital of the Kentish Weald, lies near the River Crane. Its name comes from the crane and herons which frequently visited the stream. It has kept the same look for centuries. Its fame came from the cloth trade (called broadcloth) and was once the capital of the Weadlden woollen industry, being one of the wealthiest and largest towns in Kent.
It forms an L-shape and you can find some old weatherboarded and brick and timber houses lining the narrow medieval streets, a church, a museum which depicts the history of the area through its broadcloth manufacture and other industries and the Union Mill. The Union Mill is the largest working windmill in England.
Cranbrook became a market town but also an artistic one as well. It is from 1855 to 1900 that some artists lived and worked in the area and became known as the Cranbrook Colony.
Cranbrook has a good range of accommodation to offer, suitable for all tastes and budgets. Hotels, bed and breakfasts, self catering facilities and camping and caravanning nearby.
Cafes, restaurants, pubs and wine bars are offering delicious sandwiches or fine cuisine.
Cranbrook has a mix of general and specialist shops where you can find gifts, souvenirs, antiques and fashions together with your every day shop.
But Cranbrook is also an ideal touring base for visiting the area and 3 miles from it are the famous Sissinghurst Gardens. Enjoy a train ride on the Tenterden to Bodiam line, discover Bodiam Castle or Rolvenden’s Historic Vehicles collection. Taste the wines at Biddenden or Tenterden vineyards, or perhaps stroll along Bedgebury Pinetum with its wonderful collection of conifers.
