About Haverfordwest

Haverfordwest is situated in Pembrokeshire, the most western county of Wales. It is the market town for most of Pembrokeshire and is located on the River Cleddau. Its name means “ford used by bucks” from the Old English word haefer, meaning goat, buck, the place where goats could cross the river.

Thanks to its location on the river, it became the second biggest port in Wales for coal, slates, barley, butter, oats, hides and wool.

There are a wide range of attractions to discover. The Castle, was built by the Flemings and played an important protection role in the development of the market town and commercial centre that Haverforwest has now become. It has a tumultuous history throughout the years.

The three memorials commemmorate the men who fell in the South African war of 1899-1902, and the first and second world wars. There is also a red granite column where William Nichol the Marian martyr was burnt at the stake in 1558. The crypt is the vaulted cellar of a 13th century house whilst Foley House was built for John Nash for Richard Foley. Discover the Priory ruins and its medieval gardens. The town museum offers information of art and local history.

The number of churches and chapels is quite impressive, amongst them St Martin’s is the oldest and bears an octogonal stone steeple whilst St Mary’s is said to have been built on the remains of a Norman structure.
