About Helston

Helston is a quaint old Cornish town with superb surroundings and countryside to match. The town was formally a port until the Looe Bar formed across the River Cober which formed Looe Pool.

Helston, market town, is the perfect location for exploring the South West Cornwall and has a lot to offer to visitors no matter what age. There is plenty of Georgian and Victorian architecture, amongst them the famous Monument built in the memory of Humphry Millet Grylls (famous local banker and solicitor which help to keep the local tin mine open). The Blue Anchor, originally a monk’s rest house, is now a tavern and possibly the oldest private brewery in the country.

The town is famous for the Furry Dance through the streets with lots of colour and music, but only on Flora Day May 8th.

Helston also has a Victorian Guildhall and a fine Regency Church which contained a spectacular 24-branch chandelier, a gift from the Earl of Godolphin in 1763 and whose churchyard contains the grave of one of the towns most famous sons, the engineer Henry Trengrouse (1772-1854), who pioneered the rocket-firing apparatus used by lifeboatmen and coastguards.

Flambards Victorian Village and Garden is a beautiful life size recreation of a turn of the century village of streets and alleyways with over 50 shops, homes and traders. All are authentically equipped and furnished with thousands of genuine artefacts, which deserve to be lingered over.

Seafood restaurants, tea-rooms or take-aways are all present in Helston.
