About Hexham

Hexham is located in West Northumberland and is the largest town in the county. We can trace its history as far back as Saxon times.

It was well known for the manufacture of tan and leather goods, especially gloves.

Hexham has a lot to offer. A popular choice for tourists, its medieval buildings are magnificent. Hexham Abbey, overlooking the Market Place, a Benedictine Abbey, was first built around 674. The present building is from the 12th century but some of its original features remain. It became Hexham parish church in 1537. Some fine carvings and paintings examples of the Roman and Saxon times can be admired.

Hexham boasts two medieval towers in the town, the oldest purpose built gaol in the country now a museum and the Moot Hall from the fourteenth century.

Hexham is surrounded by the lovely countrysides of the Tyne Valley and the Northumberland hills. The neighbouring villages are picturesque and worth visiting.

For a relaxing time, head for the award-winning parks or enjoy the riverside and woodland paths and trails around.
