The particularities of the town’s layout resides in the narrow yards and lanes branching from the main street.

The town is proud of its two castles, Castle Howe and Kendal Castle, dating from the 12th century, it is now a ruin but worth the detour as you get lovely views of the town, its two museums, the Kendal Museum depicts the life of the castle and the history of the town, whereas the Museum of Lakeland Life is house in the stable block of Abbot Hall. Also are enjoyable its historical buildings, amongst them the parish church, houses built from the 17th century onwards, and its bridges.

Shopping enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice as the town has five shopping arcades. Also the town centre is pedestrianised enabling a safer access to the shopping areas.
