About Launceston
Launceston is proud of being acknowledged as the “Gateway to Cornwall”. One mile from the Devon/Cornwall border, it is an area of natural beauty and and ideal base for visiting the surroundings. Located between two Moors, Bodmin and Dartmoor, it offers an easy access to the North and South Coast but also to the cities of Exeter, Plymouth and Truro.
We can trace Launceston back to Celtic times and the first impressive site you can see coming into Launceston is its Norman Castle. Built by Brian de Bretagne in the 11th century, it reflects the status of wealth and power of Middle Age.
Discover the town with its visitors trail which lets you admire the architecture and historical sites such as the 16th century Church of St. Mary Magdalene which possesses the most intricate carved exteriors of any church in the country but also Lawrence House, one of the finest museums in the South West , the Northgate and Prison, the Town Hall with its fine clock and the Town Square.
Rediscovered in the late 19th century, the ruins of Launceston Priory stand next to the Parish Church of St Thomas. The priory was at one time the wealthiest in Cornwall.
But Launceston is also a Market Town with a vast array of modern and traditional shops located in and around the Town Square.
