Margate Accommodation
About Margate
Margate has been a leading seaside resort for at least 250 years. During Georgian and Victorian times, the city workers and the upper classes used to come to Margate to make the most of the fresh air and its sandy beaches, a lot of them docking at Margate's Pier.
It is not surprising that its history is linked to the sea and Margate is proud of its maritime tradition which you can discover at the Margate Museum in market Place offering a selection of exhibits and displays.
Around 1816, the arrival of the steamboats is believed to have given the town a fantastic lift, Margate is also known to have been the first resort to have donkey rides as far back as 1890 and the first to introduce the deck chairs in 1898.
One week-end in July, you will be able to enjoy its annual jazz festival. Take a look at the Shell Grotto with its fascinating walls and roof covered in wonderful decoration made of four million shells. In King Street, you can see a Tudor House and the Old Town and Market Place are worth a visit.
Nowadays, Margate beach is very attractive for families with young children and if you are looking for shops, the town centre offers a big selection.
Margate at night is enjoyable as it offers plenty of theatres, bars , pubs, restaurants, casinos, bowling alleys and nightclubs.
