About Newark
Newark, a market town in Nottinghamshire sits on the River Trent and is full of historic buildings.
Newark Castle is probably the most famous landmark of the town and although only 20% of the building stands nowadays, it remains a popular place to visit. Alexander the Magnificent built the impressive three-storey gatehouse which is the most complete example of a Romanesque gatehouse to survive in England.
Discover the Newark Museum and the Millgate Museum of Folk Life depicting Newark way of life in the 19 and 20th centuries, the Town Treasures and Art Gallery in the Georgian Town hall, the Newark Air Museum for the aviation enthusiasts,but also the cobbled Market Square and the Buttermarket. Home to one of the best schools of lutherie and the Newark School of violin making, Newark was famous for its wool and cloth trade during the Victorians and later for its iron works and sugar refinery.
It became famous for standing for the Royalist cause during the Civil War.
