Penrich has a long history and it is in the 9th and 10 centuries that the town was the Capital of Cumbria. Penrith Castle has an original history. It started in 1399 when a stone wall was added to an earlier pele tower. With much addition and improvement, it became a royal fortress for Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Brougham Castle was built by the Normans and some of it remains nowadays.
Legend has that a giant and King of All Cumbria was buried in the giantís grave in St Andrewís Churchyard. The stones surrounding the grave seem to represent the wild boar he killed in Inglewood Forest.
The Penrith Museum and tourist information are located in the former Robinsonís School, a lovely Elizabethan building. The millennium Trail explain about the architecture, history of the town.
Enjoy walking up to the Penrith Beacon, monument built in 1719 as you will get a spectacular view of the Eden Valley. Castle Park is ideal for those enjoying tennis, bowls, crazy golf and pitch and putt.
